The Quiet Work of Winter: How Prayer Journaling Is Carrying Me Through

As I sit here by my window, watching the frost creep across the glass, the house feels especially quiet. It’s January 2026, and if I’m being completely honest, there are days when that quiet feels a little too loud.

Being a single woman during the winter months can be a unique challenge. While the rest of the world seems to be “cozying up” in pairs, I’ve often found myself wondering if I’m just… waiting. Waiting for spring, waiting for a partner, waiting for my “real” life to begin.

But this year, something shifted. I decided I didn’t want to just endure the winter; I wanted to inhabit it. I decided to pick up a pen and start prayer journaling, and it has completely transformed how I see this season of my life. And truly, here is why I’m pouring my heart onto these pages this winter.

1. I Need a Place for the “Internal Noise”

In my singleness, I’ve realized that I have a lot of internal dialogue. Without a spouse to process the day with, my thoughts—the fears about my career, the “what-ifs” about my future, and the tiny joys—tend to loop endlessly in my head.

That’s why writing my prayers down gives those thoughts a place to land. When I write, “Lord, I feel a bit lonely tonight,” it stops being a heavy cloud over my head and becomes a conversation with my Creator. In a way, it’s my way of externalizing my heart so I can actually see what’s going on inside.

2. I’m Building a “History of Trust”

Beyond just clearing my head, there is something so powerful about flipping back to a page from three weeks ago and seeing a prayer that I’ve already seen God move in.

In the middle of a cold, grey February, it’s easy to feel like God is silent. But honestly, my journal is evidence that He isn’t. I’m documenting His faithfulness in real-time. Whether it’s a random check in the mail or just a sense of peace during a stressful workday, I’m building a record that says: God was here in 2026, and He was good to me.

3. I’m Reclaiming My “Winter Roots”

3. I’m Reclaiming My “Winter Roots”

I used to think winter was a dead season, but I recently learned that trees do some of their most important growing in the cold—deep underground where no one can see. With that in mind, my prayer journal has become the place where I tend to my “roots.”

My prayer journal has become the place where I tend to my “roots.” I’m asking God the hard questions that I usually stay too busy to face:

  • What are You refining in my character right now?
  • How can I love my community better with the freedom I have today?
  • Is there any part of my heart I’m keeping locked away from You?

4. Fighting the “Winter Blues” with Gratitude

It’s so easy to feel lonely when the weather keeps me indoors. However, prayer journaling shifts my focus from what I’m missing to what I have. Writing down five things I’m grateful for each morning changes the entire temperature of my day.

5. It’s My Digital Detox

Let’s be real: in 2026, the digital world is louder than ever. It is so easy to fall into the “comparison trap” while scrolling on a cold night. In contrast, my journal is my sanctuary. There are no notifications—just me, a messy ink pen, and the Holy Spirit.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10

That verse has become my winter anthem. I’ve realized that my singleness isn’t a waiting room—it’s a garden. And even though it’s winter, things are growing.

How I’m Keeping it Simple

If you’re like me and feel intimidated by a blank page, don’t worry. I don’t write poetic essays every night. Some days, my “journaling” is just a bulleted list:

  • Adoration: God, You are steady when I feel shaky.
  • Thanksgiving: Thank You for the way the sun hit the snow today.
  • Supplication: Please help me trust Your timing with my future.
