The Philosophy of the Pearl: Why I’m Choosing Timelessness
I begin each morning choosing me. After my bible study, I am ready for the day by putting on my pearls. It’s something about the sound of the “click” from my clasp when I put them on that gives me a sense of comfort.
If you were to look at my vanity on any given morning, you would find a strand of pearls. They are my signature—a quiet, luminous constant in an ever-changing world.
But I don’t reach for them simply because they are “classic.” I wear them because of the story they tell about my life, without me having to say a single word.
Beauty Born of Friction
I’ve always been fascinated by the fact that the pearl is the only gemstone created by a living being. It doesn’t emerge from the earth through fire or tectonic pressure; it is born of an irritation.
When a grain of sand enters the oyster, the creature doesn’t reject the intruder. Instead, it responds by coating that grit in layer upon layer of luster.
As I navigate my forties, I see this as the perfect metaphor for my own journey. I have had my share of “grit”—the sharp edges of heartbreak, the uncertainty of career shifts, and those long, quiet seasons of waiting. Like the pearl, I’ve realized I have the power to coat those experiences in grace until they become something luminous. I’m not interested in hiding my history; I want to transform it into a glow.
The Polish of Identity
I’ve always believed that adornment is never about vanity; it is about identity. When I put on my pearls, I am reminding myself of my own resilience. They are the ultimate “Power of Presence” accessory. They don’t shout; they glow.
Whether paired with a crisp white shirt for a morning of writing or a silk slip dress for a quiet evening at home, pearls ground me. They remind me that elegance is not about how much we have, but how we carry what we have been through.
The Luster of the Season
In this era of my life—one of unlimited possibilities—I find myself seeking that “pearly” quality in everything I touch:
- Boundaries that are soft yet firm.
- A glow that radiates from the inside out.
- A beauty that doesn’t fade, but only improves with time.
This week, I am leaning into my history. I am honoring the grit. And I am choosing to turn it into something radiant.
Georgiana Edit
This is my way of active doing. I am choosing a signature identity as an act of self-love. I believe reaching for my pearls every single day has shown I am showing up for myself every single day. Choosing something as small as a ring or a silk scarf can also be an act of self-love.
No more waiting for special occasions to buy or wear that fancy dress. Everyday is an opportunity for a special occasion, if your life permits. Just remember you are the special occasion so act accordingly.
