Cozy Books to Read This Autumn: A Little Reading List for Quiet Evenings

Hello, my Darlings!

Autumn is finally in full bloom where I live. When I look out my window in the mornings, I can see the leaves beginning to change. The trees still have a little green on them, but slowly but surely, shades of brown, orange, and red are beginning to appear. It’s such a beautiful sight to see.

And the beauty doesn’t stop there. Whenever I leave home, I find fallen leaves scattered along the ground. There’s something about the crunch of autumn leaves beneath my loafers that gives me a feeling I can’t quite explain. The cooler temperatures have also made it much more enjoyable to get outside for a walk.

But as much as I’ve been enjoying my walks, I’ve been enjoying being at home even more. The cooler evenings and gentle breezes have made staying in feel especially inviting. With autumn finally here, I’ve been making reading more of a priority in the evenings as I continue to embrace a slower way of living.

Over the past few months, I’ve been collecting books that I think would make lovely reads after a long day at work.

I chose these books for different reasons. They aren’t all from the same genre, nor do they share the same setting. When choosing a book, I tend to gravitate toward the atmosphere of the story and how I imagine it might make me feel while reading it.

I recently shared a little video of my autumn reading stack over on Pinterest, and I thought it would be nice to bring those books here to the blog and share a little more about each one.

You can watch my little autumn reading stack over on Pinterest.

The Pumpkin Spice Café — Laurie Gilmore

There’s something about a small-town setting that feels especially fitting for autumn, and The Pumpkin Spice Café has the cozy atmosphere I often look for in a seasonal read.

The story follows Jeanie, who takes over her aunt’s café in the charming town of Dream Harbor. There, she meets Logan, a local farmer who prefers his quiet routine. It has all the ingredients of a small-town romance, from a cozy café to an unexpected connection.

This is the sort of book I would reach for when I want something lighthearted after a long day at work.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles — Agatha Christie

There is something about a classic murder mystery that feels right for a quiet autumn evening. The Mysterious Affair at Styles takes us to an English country estate where a wealthy woman is mysteriously poisoned, leaving her family and household under suspicion.

This is Agatha Christie’s first novel, and it introduces the wonderfully observant detective Hercule Poirot.

I wanted to include a little classic mystery in my autumn reading stack, and what better place to begin than with Agatha Christie? An English country house, family secrets, and a mystery waiting to be solved sound like a lovely way to spend a chilly evening.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover — D. H. Lawrence

For something a little different, I included Lady Chatterley’s Lover, a classic novel about love, desire, and the complicated expectations of society.

The story follows Constance Chatterley, a woman living in an unhappy marriage who finds herself drawn to the gamekeeper on her husband’s estate. Their relationship challenges the social boundaries of the time and explores what it means to long for both emotional and physical connection.

This is certainly a departure from my lighter reading selections, but I enjoy having a variety of genres on my bookshelf. Sometimes a classic that explores the complexities of relationships is just what I’m in the mood to discover.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder — Joanne Fluke

Now, a murder mystery that involves chocolate chip cookies? That certainly caught my attention!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder introduces Hannah Swensen, the owner of The Cookie Jar bakery in the small town of Lake Eden, Minnesota. When a local deliveryman is discovered murdered behind her bakery, Hannah finds herself searching for answers while keeping her business running.

I thought this would be a fun addition to my autumn reading stack. There’s something charming about a small-town mystery with a bakery at the center of it all. A little suspense, a little baking, and perhaps a craving for homemade cookies along the way.

The Lost Bookshop — Evie Woods

I have always found the idea of wandering into a little independent bookshop rather romantic, especially one filled with old books and stories waiting to be discovered.

The Lost Bookshop follows Opaline, Martha, and Henry, three people whose lives become connected through a mysterious bookshop in Dublin. Moving between different periods, the story brings together hidden histories, personal discoveries, and a touch of magic.

This one appealed to me because of its setting and the mystery surrounding the bookshop itself. I love the thought of a story that celebrates books while taking its readers somewhere unexpected.

Murder by Cheesecake — Rachel Ekstrom Courage

If you enjoy The Golden Girls, this one might catch your attention!

Murder by Cheesecake brings Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia together for an unexpected murder investigation. What begins as preparations for Rose’s cousin’s wedding takes a rather unfortunate turn when Dorothy’s date is discovered dead in a hotel freezer, leaving the ladies to figure out who is responsible.

I thought this would be a fun change of pace among my autumn reads. There is something comforting about familiar characters, especially ones known for their friendship, humor, and unforgettable conversations.

And honestly, a mystery involving The Golden Girls and cheesecake sounds like quite an entertaining combination.

Fall Into Temptation — Lucy Score

I couldn’t put together an autumn reading stack without including a little romance.

Fall Into Temptation takes us to the charming small town of Blue Moon, where Beckett Pierce, the town’s mayor, has little interest in complicating his life with romance. That is, until Gianna Decker arrives in town with her children, hoping for a fresh start. What follows is a small-town romance filled with unexpected attraction and a community that seems to have an opinion about everything.

Now, Lucy Score isn’t a new author to me. I first discovered her writing through No More Secrets, which introduced me to the world of Blue Moon. I enjoyed that first book enough to want to return to the little town and spend more time getting to know its characters.

If you’d like to know a little more about my first experience reading Lucy Score, you can read my previous post, No More Secrets: My First Lucy Score read post.

I’m looking forward to seeing what this next story has in store for me. And if it’s anything like my first visit to Blue Moon, I think I’m in for an enjoyable autumn read.

A Little More Reading This Autumn

As much as I enjoy collecting books, I am trying to be intentional about making time to actually sit down and read them.

After a long day at work, it can be tempting to spend the evening scrolling through my phone or watching something on television. But I’ve been wanting to make reading a regular part of my evening routine, even if it’s only for a few chapters.

I don’t have a particular number of books I’m trying to finish this autumn. I simply want to enjoy the stories I’ve chosen without making reading feel like another task on my to-do list.

And if a book takes me a little longer to finish, that’s perfectly fine too.

So, my Darlings, tell me: What books have found their way onto your autumn reading list? Are you drawn to cozy romances, mysteries, or something entirely different?

Until next time, happy reading!
